This question comes up all the time; “what sort of workout will help me lose the most weight the fastest?” It is a totally understandable question, and it has a very misunderstood answer. The simple answer, which most everyone believes without a second thought, is cardio. Cardio will burn more calories in the same amount of time compared to a moderate effort weight lifting session; that is scientifically proven over and over. Here is the thing though; weight loss isn’t quick. Running on the treadmill 5 days a week for 45 minutes for 6 months will absolutely help you lose a whole bunch of weight, but it will also be really boring and hard to motivate yourself after a couple weeks. Mix in the elliptical, or stair stepper, and you might be able to make it a couple months.
The best way to lose weight the fastest; find a routine doing something that you love with a little variety, and keep doing it. Weight lifting is still burning calories, making it a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout will burn even more. Any sort of physical activity is good for you. Yes cardio may burn more in the same amount of time, but make sure that you are enjoying the exercise that you are doing. If you aren’t enjoying it, you’ll never reach those weight loss goals, no matter how many calories each workout may burn.
Also, the trainer in me just has to say it… No matter how much you workout, nutrition has to be in in the conversation if you are talking about weight loss.
